LOS ANGELES ... Twentieth Century Fox, Blue Sky Studios, and Academy Award-winning director Chris Wedge, who last joined forces on the blockbuster ICE AGE (grossing almost $400 million worldwide), will next team to create another three-dimensional, computer-generated world, in ROBOTS. The announcement was made today by Chris Meledandri, President, Animation, Twentieth Century Fox.
ROBOTS will open nearly three years to the day of ICE AGE's 2002 release.
To help realize their vision for their next event animated feature, Fox, Blue Sky and Wedge have assembled one of the most impressive casts in the history of the genre.
Set to star in the animated feature film are "Star Wars" Ewan McGregor, Oscar® winner Halle Berry, unique motion picture ("Young Frankenstein") and theatrical ("The Producers") comic genius - and Tony® and Academy Award winner - Mel Brooks, Drew Carey, Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, recent Tony nominee Stanley Tucci, Oscar winner Dianne Wiest, Jennifer Coolidge, Paul Giamatti, Dan Hedaya, DL Hughley, Jamie Kennedy, Harland Williams Sofia Vergara, and Amanda Bynes.
Based on early test footage, Mattel, Burger King, Kellogg's, Keebler, Hewlett Packard, Harper Collins and Vivendi Universal Games have committed to global partnerships - an unprecedented two years in advance of the film's March 11, 2005 release.
ROBOTS presents a visually spectacular, uniquely imaginative world, which Wedge, his team of artists and technicians, and the celebrated cast have populated with memorable robots, each with "his" / "her" distinct personality. The result is an amusing and emotional journey that pushes the boundaries of animation, while introducing characters rich with whimsy, heart and soul.
Populating this incredible universe are Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor), a young genius inventor who dreams of making the world a better place; Cappy (Halle Berry), a sexy executive 'bot with whom Rodney is instantly smitten; the nefarious corporate tyrant Ratchet who locks horns with Rodney; Big Weld (Mel Brooks), a master inventor who has lost his way; and a group of misfit 'bots known as the Rusties.
Wedge's 2002 feature directorial debut, ICE AGE, became one of the year's biggest successes, penetrating the culture in its initial theatrical release and going on to become a DVD and home video phenomenon - and one of the most profitable films in the history of Twentieth Century Fox. Wedge won the Oscar® for directing the animated short "Bunny," whose realistic lighting effects gave the film a unique look, feel and organic realism. One of the founders of Blue Sky Studios, where both "Bunny" and ICE AGE were produced, Wedge played a key role in developing the company's proprietary lighting software. Twentieth Century Fox is a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, a unit of Fox Entertainment Group.
